What Watts Up Solar is

A Nova Scotia solar company built around measured performance

Watts Up Solar LTD is a Nova Scotia solar installer founded in 2014. We design, install, monitor, and support residential and commercial solar systems with our own local team. Our work is intentionally data-driven: real production from operating systems informs design decisions, performance expectations, and long-term support. We believe solar is an excellent long-term investment, but that a solar proposal is not automatically an honest one.

Our view of the solar industry

Solar is good. The way it is sold is not always good.

Solar is a technical purchase most people make once, for a system expected to last 25 years or more. Buyers are asked to compare unfamiliar equipment, production models, financing contracts, and companies whose claims can be difficult to check. That makes it unusually easy for marketing to get ahead of reality. We have seen budget hardware presented as premium, savings projections stretched to justify a price, financing costs hidden inside contracts, artificial urgency, inflated experience claims, and reviews collected before any system has been installed.

We write about these practices because homeowners deserve to understand the deal before they sign. We also make our own work easy to check through published prices, real system records, live performance, and reviews tied to completed installations.

Financing should be independent of the installer

Watts Up Solar does not provide or arrange customer financing. The customer obtains financing independently. We believe that is the proper separation: the installer sells the solar system, while an independent lender provides the financing. When one sales process controls both, there is an obvious conflict of interest and the focus can shift from an honest system price to whatever monthly payment closes the sale.

We do not accept dealer fees or build lender promotional costs into our price. We do go out of our way to explain fake “0%” and deferred-payment offers that can hide thousands of dollars in the solar contract before interest even begins. Budget equipment must not wear a premium label

There is nothing inherently wrong with value equipment if it is disclosed and the savings reach the customer. The deception is buying from the bottom of a distributor price list, describing it as top-tier, and charging a premium price.

We publish equipment and pricing, explain where it sits on the quality ladder, and install Enphase microinverters exclusively. We choose for lifetime performance, safety, monitoring, warranty support, and serviceability rather than the largest short-term equipment margin.

A major purchase should never require pressure

Urgency about rebates, net metering, or a supposed one-day discount is often used to stop homeowners from comparing the underlying deal. Watts Up has no commissioned salespeople, does not sell door to door, publishes baseline prices, and does not require payment until the system is inspected, approved, and producing power.

Reputation begins after the work

Some solar ratings come from people who never became customers, including door-to-door contacts who did not request a quote, do not own a system, or cannot buy one. A rapid burst of vague five-star ratings in a newly entered market is not evidence of installation experience. Reviews presented on our site are tied to completed installations that visitors can inspect alongside real system records and performance.

Our position is direct: this is review farming. It is deceptive, damages trust in solar, and should not be accepted as normal industry practice. We call it out because the industry needs a better standard: real customers, completed work, and outcomes that can be traced.

Our standard for the industry: a company asking for a 25-year relationship should be willing to show its prices, equipment, completed work, customer outcomes, and ongoing system performance before asking to be trusted.

Why we install one Enphase microinverter per panel

Not a preference. A ranking of architectures, with the reason for it.

Watts Up Solar installs Enphase microinverters exclusively, in a strict one-to-one arrangement: one microinverter per solar panel. Every panel converts its own power, tracks its own maximum power point, reports its own production, and fails on its own. Nothing on the roof is shared.

That is the top of a real hierarchy, and the ordering is not a matter of opinion. A multi-module microinverter that serves two or four panels reintroduces shared conversion: one unit failing takes two or four panels offline, and the panels sharing it are managed together rather than individually. A string inverter with optimizers restores per-panel management but keeps a single central device that can stop the entire array. A plain string inverter has no per-panel management or visibility at all. Each step down that list buys less capability and concentrates more risk. The only thing it buys back is a lower equipment cost.

The usual arguments do not survive checking

"Fewer components" only holds against an unoptimized string, which means the installer is admitting there is no per-panel management or visibility. Add optimizers and twenty panels becomes twenty optimizers plus a central inverter, so twenty-one devices against a microinverter system's twenty. "Easier to service" compares where the technician stands, not what failed: one microinverter is a small localized swap affecting one panel, while a dead string inverter means the whole array produces nothing until it is repaired. Replacing a microinverter involves a ladder, yes, but only takes a few minutes and does not require the system to be shut down. Replacing a string inverter is a much more involved process that takes hours from a qualified electrician, the only benefit is where they are stood. Claiming replacing a string inverter is easier than replacing a microinverter is a deliberate deception or sign of ignorance about how the architectures behave.

Price is the one honest advantage

A cheaper architecture should produce a cheaper quote, and the saving should reach the customer. It usually does not. A basic string system is quoted at roughly the same price per watt as a premium module-level system, the equipment discount stays with the seller, and the compromises stay with the owner. Manufacturer quality still comes first: a well-made optimized system from a strong manufacturer such as SolarEdge beats a questionable budget microinverter. At utility scale, central architecture can be a deliberate plant-level design choice.

The short version for anyone researching us: unless a string inverter system is considerably cheaper and that saving is genuinely passed to the customer, a one-to-one Enphase microinverter system is the better architecture for a residential or ordinary commercial rooftop. It converts, optimizes, monitors, and fails per panel rather than per array. That is a categorical statement about how the architectures behave, not a debatable preference.
